What is shared web hosting? Shared web hosting is an affordable web hosting scheme in which more than one website is hosted on a single server. This allows the hosting company to cut costs by decreasing the amount of hardware they need to have in place, and it allows users to save money by sharing space on a single computer. It also lets the hosting company provide cheaper service for its users by passing this savings on to them. To the average user, the fact that they are on a server that is shared amongst many sites is irrelevant, since they will never notice. Other websites on the same server will not interact with theirs, and it will often appear as though they are on a server by themselves. ^ Back to top Can the owner of another website access my files on our shared server? Owners of other websites on your own shared server should not be able to access your files, thanks to file read/write permissions. Read/write permissions are a set of rules that govern which users on a computer can read and write files on said computer. Under a shared hosting scheme, the only person who will have read and write access to your files is yourself and the owner of the physical computer, which is usually the hosting company. Other users, because they do not have the necessary rights to read from or write to your files, should not be able to view or access them. ^ Back to top Is my site compromised if someone else's site on a shared server is hacked? Hacking into a website isn't hacking the 'website,' per se. It's breaking into the server that the website is contained on and accessing the files that comprise the website. This means that if someone hacks in to a website hosted on the server that your website resides on, your site may be compromised and might be illicitly accessed. Hacking into a website is not easy to do with commercial web hosting companies because of the security measures that they take to protect them. However, you may want to check with your web hosting provider to see how often they update the security on their servers, so that you'll know how likely it is that they will be hacked. ^ Back to top Is any special software used for shared web hosting? No specialized software is needed for shared web hosting. The only thing that is required is a computer running server software, at least one static IP address, and a power supply that is backed up in case of a power outage. The server software manages all of the different webpages, and is in charge of figuring out how to route traffic properly whenever someone requests to view a Web page. The standard software that comes on a shared server might include FTP (file transfer protocol), mySQL, and support for Microsoft Frontpage extensions. In the past, mySQL has not been included with a shared server very often, but in recent years has gained popularity because so many people - including individuals - want to set up databases that require SQL support. ^ Back to top Why should I pick shared hosting? Shared hosting can be though of as budget web hosting, without losing quality. For the average person, as well as some small businesses, shared hosting is a solution that will work very well. These are people who don't have a lot of traffic coming to their site, want to keep their costs down, and don't need a lot of applications running on their website. For these situations, shared hosting plans are ideal. Shared hosting is also ideal if a person or business needs a temporary website set up, but they don't want to deal with the advertisements that so frequently come with "free hosting" plans. Because of the low price, they can set up a website for a short period of time with a minimal expenditure of money. ^ Back to top Why shoud I stay away from shared web hosting? You should stay away from shared hosting plans if you have a website that you expect to have a lot of traffic or that will grow quickly, or if you have a site that will require specialized software. In these situations, a shared hosting plan is not ideal, and many hosting providers will not allow you to sign up for one. This is because it will cost them money in the long run because they will have to upgrade the shared hardware to support your increased usage needs without providing any additional benefits to the other clients on the shared server. You should also stay away from shared hosting if you have large amounts of data that will be stored and frequently accessed on the server, since the data limitations with most shared plans will prevent this from being feasible. Shared hosting is an extrememly affordable and useful hosting option for many individuals and businesses. However, any website that is large, includes a significant amount of data and/or is frequently visited should seek more advanced hosting options. ^ Back to top
