Maximize your credit card rewards

Credit card reward programs have become more advanced over the last handful of years. Some may say that “complicated” is a better term to use than “advanced,” but any way that you look at it, it is safe to say that rewards programs are different than they used to be.

Regardless of the specifics of your credit card reward program, following these simple tips will help you to maximize the benefits you get from that reward program:

  • Find out if points can ever expire. If they do expire in 12 months, for example, be sure to redeem points before they expire.

  • Find out if your reward program offers a larger percentage of rewards for certain types of purchases or purchases from certain stores. These incentives are sometimes seasonal, as well. For example, gas purchases in the summer may receive a larger percentage of rewards.

  • Do a little research before redeeming your points. Find out how much that item that you are considering redeeming your points for would cost if you were to buy it outright. Consider redeeming your points for gift cards, as they can often provide the highest dollar value for your points.
