Make a list, check it twice
Don’t forget this important step when you buy home insurance
Should your home or belongings be destroyed by some major catastrophe, the burden of proof will be up to you to document what you lost. Previously detailed documentation can be a godsend when you are traumatized by a loss and have to present a list of your belongings.
Use this checklist to document your belongings:
1. Photograph or video tape all of the contents of your home. Include the contents of your garage, patio, and storage sheds.
2. Keep receipts and make copies.
3. Keep these items in a safe place, like a fireproof safe or safety deposit box.
4. For individual high-dollar “scheduled” items, provide photos, receipts and appraisals for your agent to keep on file.
5. Keep on hand your insurance company’s claims reporting line: in your car, with a relative or friend
These documentation steps take time, but the process is much easier and faster while you still have your belongings. Creating and maintaining documentation of your belongings can make your overall homeowners insurance experience a much better one if the time ever arrives to file a claim.
