You may not need that unlimited plan
An unlimited long distance calling plan for your landline phone – you can’t go wrong with that, right? Wrong. Unlimited plans are not always the best choice.
It is relatively common these days to find unlimited long distance options from various companies. These unlimited plans are usually bundled with a series of other services and you can also occasionally find a stand-alone unlimited calling plan for a set monthly fee.
These types of plans sound good in theory but may not be the best option. Long distance rates for landlines can easily be found for 3 cents per minute or less. Using 3 cents per minute as an example rate, a rough calculation shows that you could talk for more than 600 minutes (10 hours) in one month for less than $20. And many of these low-rate plans for no monthly fees or monthly minimums.
Check out other options before agreeing to sign up for that unlimited long distance plan. It sure does sound nice to have unlimited minutes, but will you use them? You could easily save $100 – $200 or more over the year by going with a traditional per-minute plan with a low rate instead.
