International cell phone use
Cell phone carriers generally make use one of three different technologies to operate their networks: CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) or iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology.
GSM technology is the standard technology for more than 200 countries. So, if you are hoping to use your cell phone on an upcoming trip overseas, owning a GSM-capable cell phone is a great step in the right direction.
AT&T (formerly Cingular) and T-Mobile operate GSM networks in the U.S., while Nextel, Sprint and Verizon do not operate GSM networks. So, if you have service with AT&T or T-Mobile, you may already own a GSM-capable phone.
If you already own a GSM-capable phone, you cannot simply fly overseas and start making calls but you will be a step ahead of those who do not own GSM-capable phones. A prepaid SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card for the country you will be visiting, along with that GSM cell phone, will most likely produce the most cost-effective results.

I put a second line on my cell phone. It is a lot easier than getting a second sim plus it saves you money.
