GSM technology explained

GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is the standard technology used for mobile phones in more than three quarters of the global cell phone market.

While knowing the underlying technology that powers your cell phone is not exactly essential information for day-to-day living, this knowledge can come in quite handy in certain circumstances.

GSM technology is the most popular choice for mobile phones in more than 200 countries across the globe, which almost always makes it the preferred mobile technology for those who are, or will be, traveling overseas.

GSM technology is a completely digital system that is known for it’s prowess in the area of data communication. In fact, GSM is known as the pioneer of the SMS (short message service), or text-messaging, capability.

Currently, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile both operate GSM networks.
