New York enacts new rules for younger drivers
One thing that can affect insurance quotes is the age of a driver who is applying for a policy. However, some states are making efforts to improve the quality of younger drivers.
New rules in New York will stiffen requirements for the state’s graduated license program. Through the new rules, younger drivers will have to complete 50 hours of supervised driving before taking a road test. Prior to the rule change, drivers needed 20 hours of supervised driving.
Furthermore, drivers with a "junior license" will only be allowed one non-family member in their car while they operate it without a parent or guardian with a license.
These types of requirements are part of the graduated license system that many states use to train younger drivers. Michael Barry, vice president of media relations for the Insurance Information Institute, said that every state in the country enforces at least one requirement put forward by the system.
"Congress is also considering federal legislation to this effect," Barry said.
Along with the new regulations for younger drivers, New York put a ban on text messaging for all vehicle operators. Using electronic devices has been noted as one of the leading causes for driver distractions, which can lead to accidents.
