Protection week centers on financial education for all stages of life
Whether it be savings accounts or credit cards, it pays for consumers to keep up with the best financial tactics, regardless of their age.
That’s part of the message being put forward this week during National Consumer Protection Week. The week brings together the resources of a number of organizations in order to educate consumers about various financial topics.
This time around, the week is focused on reminding consumers that being aware of finances isn’t just for older people. Education should start at an early age, and the week’s website – www.consumer.gov/ncpw – has a number of resources to help both older and younger consumers.
For example, the site provides a link to a virtual mall set up by the Federal Trade Commission. At the mall, games are presented that give kids a chance to learn about how advertising affects them and why competition in business can help a consumer.
"To help our children grow into financially responsible adults and avoid frauds and scams, we must help them understand the marketplace," President Barack Obama said in a proclamation for NCPW.
Along with the resources made available through the site, there are other ways for parents to help their children learn about financial planning. Parents should explain how things like credit work and why it is important to save money for future expenses.
