Internet Acess Tips and Advice - Alternatives

tip Business Internet Access
What are my options for business Internet service?

If you have a business, there's no doubt that nowadays you will need Internet access. A modern day business without Internet service will be a step behind the competition. In the Internet services market, there are many different options for businesses. The three most popular business Internet services are cable, DSL and T1.

Cable and DSL Internet services for business are very similar. Cable Internet service is usually a bit faster, while DSL is often known to have a higher customer satisfaction ranking in certain areas. The pricing is usually similar as well.

If you want a more robust option for your business, T1 could be the answer for you. T1 Internet service is much faster than either cable or DSL options. It is also more reliable and can handle a bigger workload. A T1 connection can handle over 50 Internet users at the same time, which is much more than either cable or DSL. The drawback with T1 is its price, which makes it a viable option for only bigger companies.

tip Fiber Optic Internet Service
What is fiber optic internet service?

Fiber optic Internet service is similar to that of DSL or cable Internet services in that it provides a fast and reliable online experience.  However, fiber optic Internet service is much faster than either DSL or cable – more than 20 times faster, in fact.  Compared to dial-up Internet services, fiber optic can be 150 times faster.

The price for fiber optic Internet access varies based on the different options in upstream and downstream speed.  While it isn't available in all areas, fiber optic is a very good option for business or even personal use.  Since there are different upstream and downstream speed options, the scalability is an impressive feature not found on most other comparable Internet services.

tip About T1 Connections
What is a T1 connection?

A T1 connection brings a whole new level of speed when it comes to surfing the Internet. While a normal connection transmits data at around 30 kilobits per second, a T1 provider transmits data at over 1.54 megabits per second. A T1 line is a tremendous upgrade in speed and overall reliability.

Mostly used by companies, T1 connections can be extremely expensive. A T1 line isn't recommended for home use, as it's built to be able to handle several hundred simultaneous Internet surfers. In addition to Internet use, a T1 connection can carry up to 24 voice channels for telephone use.

tip Choosing Satellite Internet Service
Why should I choose satellite internet service?

If you live in a remote area that is far from a DSL company and does not offer cable Internet access, then satellite service is right for you. Speed is much faster than dial-up, but normally slightly slower than DSL or cable. There may also be problems with connectivity and service with satellite Internet during bad weather conditions.

Satellite Internet service is an expensive option, compared to other broadband Internet service, but you can get it almost anywhere in world. You will need to have a satellite receiver professionally installed.
Popular satellite internet providers include DirecTV, Hughes Satellite and WildBlue.

tip Benefits of Wireless Internet
What are the benefits of home wireless internet service?

High speed wireless Internet service has a wide range of benefits. First, you can rid yourself of the wires that are mandatory with other types of Internet services. Those wires not only can be bothersome, but can become expensive to replace if damaged. Going with a wireless option reduces clutter, giving you more space for more important items.

Another benefit is the speed of wireless Internet service. While it's not as fast as some other land-based options, it is significantly faster than dial-up. In fact, wireless Internet service can oftentimes be 20 times faster than its dial-up counterpart.

The most exciting benefit of home wireless Internet service is the freedom it allows. You can move from room to room while staying connected to the Internet. Wireless Internet service brings an unparalleled feeling of freedom to the Internet services market.

tip Interference Problems with Wireless
Why does my wireless service sometimes slow down at home?

Sometimes when using wireless Internet service in your home, you will find that it becomes very slow or loses range. There are several things around your house that may be causing your wireless access to slow down by interfering with the network's frequency.

Common culprits may include your microwave oven and wireless phone.

2.4Ghz is the wireless network frequency for wireless Internet and  it's also the most popular frequency for microwaves and wireless phones.

Fortunately, you can purchase a wireless phone with a different frequency, however nearly all microwaves operate on 2.4Ghz.

Therefore, you may find it impossible to work on a wireless network if you are in the same room as a microwave.

tip Protecting Your Computer When Using Wireless Internet Access
What can I do to protect my laptop when using wi-fi?

Wi-fi has made our lives easier because we can take our laptop to a variety of places, such as the airport, school and local coffee shop, and connect with no problem.

This also means your laptop has a higher security risk if you are using wireless Internet access. Follow these wireless Internet tips for protecting your computer.

Be sure that your laptop has updated firewall and antivirus protection. This is important when you're on the road with your laptop. You never know who else is using the network with you.

Second, your banking and personal information should be kept safe. Look for software that encrypts passwords so identity thieves aren't taking advantage of the wireless access.

While wi-fi can be a great convenience for many of us, it can also pose some dangers to our personal information. Be savvy when using wireless Internet access and protect your computer.
