Is Linux/Unix hosting as secure as Windows hosting?

Security of Linux/Unix Web hosting

Although linux/unix can be harder for novices to configure, the truth is that the security on a linux/unix web server is as secure or more so than that on a Windows server.

But the server must be properly configured. Because of the open source nature of the linux operating system, there are thousands of eyes viewing the code, constantly updating and improving it, and very aware to any vulnerabilities that might arise.

With popular linux distributations (also called flavors) such as Ubuntu, Knoppix, or Fedora, there are updates and patches released so quickly after flaws are found that, if the server administrator is paying attention, they can fix any problems before they can be exploited. In short, yes, linux/unix hosting is just as secure – if not more so – than Windows hosting.
