Is my site compromised if a shared server is hacked?

Consequences of a shared server getting hacked

Hacking into a website isn’t hacking the ‘website,’ per se. It’s breaking into the server that the website is contained on and accessing the files that comprise the website.

This means that if someone hacks in to a website hosted on the server that your website resides on, your site may be compromised and might be illicitly accessed. Hacking into a website is not easy to do with commercial web hosting companies because of the security measures that they take to protect them.

However, you may want to check with your web hosting provider to see how often they update the security on their servers, so that you’ll know how likely it is that they will be hacked.
