What is Bluetooth and do I need it?
Bluetooth explained
Bluetooth shares both similarities and differences with Wi-Fi. Both are wireless data transmission technologies and both are excellent choices to transfer information from one device to another. The differences pertain to their highest and best use.
While Wi-Fi is typically used for creating networks for laptops and other computer applications, Bluetooth is most useful when you want to connect two devices wirelessly when they are in close proximity to each other. Bluetooth technology uses lower bandwidth than Wi-Fi and lacks its capacity to transfer huge amounts of information quickly. However, as a wireless connection for cell phones, PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistants), and smartphones, it’s a wonderful, effective technology.
Particularly effective transmitting voice signals, Bluetooth technology is perfect for wireless earphones and headsets to allow hands free cell phone chatting.
When driving a car or working on your PC, a Bluetooth headset allows you to use your cell phone without tying up your hands or forcing you to trip over wires. This wireless technology is excellent for transferring data from your PDA or smartphone to your computer-based organizer or calendar, too.
You should decide whether you need it based on your calling patterns and personal organization activities. Bluetooth is “open source” technology, which allows various developers to match a wide variety of devices to others, creating an efficient communications link without being dependent on one or only a few manufacturers. As a solution to hands free and wireless communications issues, Bluetooth is a wonderful option.
