What type of auto insurance coverage do I need?

In order to save money on car insurance, be familiar with the different types of auto insurance coverage available and only buy the coverage that you need. Some basic types of car insurance coverage may include:
Third-party liability
- Property damage liability – Covers damage to vehicles and property of a third party caused by the policy holder.
- Bodily injury liability – Covers medical treatment, pain and suffering and loss of wages of a third party caused by the policy holder.
Minimum limits of liability insurance are oftentimes mandated by the state. You can save money on liability insurance by lowering your deductible or limits.
First-party expenses
- Comprehensive and collision – Comprehensive (comp) covers damages or replacement of the policy holder’s vehicle caused by something other than collision, such as theft or fire. Collision covers damages or replacement of the policy holder’s vehicle caused by collision.
- Personal injury protection – Covers medical expenses, loss of wages and funeral expenses for the policy holder and his/her passengers.
