I would imagine that with most policies, "family members" and "friends" are treated very differently. As with most things related to insurance, specifics can vary widely from company to company and even policy to policy.

I believe even different family members can be treated differently within a policy. For example, if a family member who lives with you (but is not officially listed on the policy) drives the car, he/she may be covered. But if a family member from out of town drives the car (obviously not on the policy, as well), he/she may not be covered.

Unfortunately, you'll have to check with your policy/company to get the 100% correct answer.

"...as long as the policy owner has granted the driver permission to drive the car."
That doesn't have to be written in the policy for that to happen?
I can allow a friend to drive my car on the fly and I would still be insured?
