Here you will find definition of commong terms relating to cell phones and wireless plans. See also: Cell Phone Tips & Advice Activation: The act of programming a wireless phone, allowing it to be active on the wireless network and giving it the ability to make and receive calls. Activation Fee: A one-time charge for activation of a cellular phone and plan. Most carriers charge this fee, although the amount often varies. Airtime: The time that a specific wireless phone is in use for talking, including both incoming and outgoing calls. Anytime Minutes: Also known as "any time" minutes and "whenever" minutes. The number of minutes in a specific calling plan that can be used at any time on any day of the week. If a user exceeds this specified number, he/she is usually charged for these additional minutes at another (usually higher) rate. Bluetooth: A short-range radio technology that provides links between wireless/mobile devices and simplifies communications among them. It enables users to connect a wide range of devices easily, without the use of cables or other physical constraints. Call Forwarding: A feature that transfers incoming calls to another phone number specified by the user (i.e. home phone). Caller ID: A feature that displays the names and phone numbers of incoming callers on the cell phone screen. Cancellation Fee: A fee charged by a wireless carrier when a user cancels his/her phone service before the expiration of his/her contract (usually one year or two years), which was agreed upon before the inception of service. Family Plan: A group plan offered by many wireless carriers to families that need more than one cell phone. With most family plans, all phones on the plan share the same minutes. If chosen wisely, this type of plan can be a cost-effective alternative to managing and paying for multiple cellular plans with different carriers. Hands Free Kit: Contains items that allow a caller to talk on the phone without physically holding the handset. National Roaming: Refers to calls made outside of the home state calling area.
