How do some long distance companies offer such cheap rates?
If you compare long distance rates, you’ll soon realize that there are some really cheap rates out there. It is not uncommon to find rates of 3 cents per minute and less. This may lead some to question, “Does this fall into the ‘too good to be true’ category?”
The quick answer is no, these deals are not too good to be true. Most of them are simply good deals. But, as always, be sure to thoroughly read over the terms and conditions of a specific offer to ensure that you are not required to sign a yearly contract, won’t incur any monthly fees, etc.
In the highly competitive long distance market, many smaller, lesser-known long distance providers have surfaced and are able to offer extremely cheap rates to consumers. How do they do it?
Simply put, many of these smaller, lesser-known long distance carriers actually use the same networks to transmit calls as the larger, more well-known long distance carriers. These (smaller) companies often “rent” in bulk from a major carrier and then re-sell this to consumers at a cheap rate.
These smaller companies are then able to maintain cheap long distance rates by keeping overall costs down — avoiding many of the big costs that can be associated with running a large-scale corporation.
