About shared (or family) calling plans

Shared calling plans (often called family plans) can be an extremely useful option for two or more people who are looking to save money on their wireless bills. As with everything related to cell phones, these types of calling plans come in many different shapes in sizes.

What is a shared calling plan?

With a shared plan, a group of cell phones – usually between two and five – share one total amount of allowed minutes each month. The first phone in a family plan pays a monthly charge for a number of minutes, and then additional members can be added for a low monthly fee, usually about $10 each. Minutes can then be distributed to different members in any combination.

In addtion, some shared plans allow unlimited free calling between plan members. This can be a very useful feature, as members of shared plans often call each other the most. In this case, those minutes would not be deducted from the allowed monthly amount.

Advantages of family plans or shared plans

- Lower monthly costs by combining multiple calling plans into one plan.
- Easier payment with just a single monthly bill.
- Ability to allot plan minutes to memebers in any proportion.
- Some shared plans allow unlimited calling between plan members.

Different variations of shared cell phone plans are provided by most wireless carriers. While all shared calling plans are similar in basic concept, some offer additional features over others. Compare shared calling plans now, or learn more about this topic at our cell phone faq.
