Surviving the credit crunch with dignity

Surviving the credit crunch with dignity Avoiding excessive debt is not something that you can simply wish for, but rather it is something that you must strive to achieve. Unfortunately, this is not an easy task, nor is it going to become any easier with the number of fall-out issues that have developed in reaction to higher fuel prices and the credit crunch.

Prices seem to continually increase to exorbitant levels not only for the fuel that we simply must use to commute back and forth to earn our paychecks, but also the prices on just about every commodity that an individual can use. "Too much for too little" is a concept that, at times, seems to have increased to newfound levels.

However, with a bit of diligence and creativity, consumers today can learn to get by on less without incurring excessive credit card bills. Perhaps one of the easiest strategies for accomplishing this is to go back to the old days of cash only.

Learn to save up for the items that you want before making your purchases. If you turn this into a habit, eventually your credit card bills will develop into a dilemma of your past.

It is all too easy to turn to credit card usage to get the things that you want. The mantra of "buy it today and pay for it tomorrow" has actually become a mantra of "buy it today and pay for it for many tomorrows." However, unless you are going to suffer illness if you don't buy something, then learn to do without, at least for a little while. Who knows, you might discover that you actually like not having excessive debt follow you around all the days of your life?

Of course, other strategies exist that can help you survive the credit crunch as well. Carpooling can create a huge savings for your fuel costs. If you don't like the idea of carpooling every day because you have errands to run or children to transport on certain days, you can always consider carpooling on one or two days a week. This way, you will still save money while retaining the freedom to take care of personal needs.

Tips to Survive the Credit Crunch:

  • Carpool to save on fuel costs
  • Switch to generic products
  • Create a list or diary product prices
  • Consider "cash only" purchases for non-essentials

And, if saving up the cash for your purchases is more than you can handle at this time, look for ways to cut waste from your spending. Switch from name-brand products to generic products or shop diligently for items that are on sale only rather than paying full price. Learn to use coupons for products that you need or regularly purchase.

Shop the stores that are offering the best deals even if you are more comfortable shopping at the same store every week. Eventually, you will find aspects of the other stores that you like just as well.

In fact, if the stores are located near each other, you can always shop at more than one store, picking up the specials and bargains at each one for a savings.

Begin to create a list or diary of the prices that you pay for items that you regularly use. This way, it will be easy for you to check which store offers the best prices when you need to replenish an item.

As you begin to discover ways to cut back and save money, you will realize that you do have a bit more cash left over each week. You can use this savings to begin to pay down your debt or you can use it to start that special fund for "cash only" purchases.
